Physical activity is incredibly important in children and adolescents lives. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, childhood obesity has more than doubled over the past three years for adolescents ages 12-19. According to the American Cancer Society, “children’s physical activity levels drop dramatically between the ages of 9 and 15.” This generation is the most sedentary and unhealthy in American history and unfortunately as a result, it is leading to some very alarming statistics. Teaching our children about the importance of exercising and staying active is extremely important for their future. School-based physical activity programs provide a wonderful opportunity to introduce physical education to children to help them learn about how regular exercise and maintaining a healthy diet are important so that they may continue to implement regular physical activity as they continue to grow.
Here are some interesting facts about physical education:
Studies have shown that a physically active student is more likely to succeed in the classroom because regular exercise and physical activity keeps your blood and oxygen flowing throughout the body. This helps the kids to focus better, absorb more information, and keep their memory sharp.
School-based physical activity programs help to reduce the risk of childhood obesity which also reduces the risk for other diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, asthma, and more.
Physical activity helps children and adolescents to build and maintain healthy muscles and bones, develop motor skills, enhance reflexes, and improve hand-eye coordination.
Keeping physically active promotes positive mental health and helps to reduce anxiety and depression. Exercising releases endorphins that give you more energy to participate in other activities and ultimately prepare you for a good night’s sleep at the end of the day.
Participating in physical activities at school helps children and young adults to develop socially through group activities; promoting teamwork and sportsmanship which will benefit them into their adult careers.
We believe in the importance of physical education and the many wonderful benefits that school-based physical activity programs have for our children, which is why physical education is a required course at The Rising School. We are also proud to offer Basketball as a part of our optional after school activities and we encourage all of our students to get involved!
