Our History

The Rising School is the product of years of planning and development by a group of knowledgeable and dedicated people. The concept for the school originally began as a collaboration between Dr. George Rising, an experienced educational leader, and his wife, Stephanie Rising, a longtime Tucson businesswoman. Encouraged by colleagues, Dr. Rising decided to take what he had learned leading some of the best schools in Tucson and combine it with his own research and convictions about how to create a great academic institution. Stephanie Rising, owner of Canyon Concepts, helped with the business and marketing side of founding the school. They chose the name “The Rising School” in homage to George’s high-school alma mater, The Roeper School, one of the top college-prep schools in Michigan. The Risings have built a stellar team, which includes the Governing Board, educational experts, business/finance advisers, and various committees.

Since 2011, this team carried out the process of creating a school. In January 2012, Rising Schools, Inc., was incorporated as a nonprofit corporation to own and operate The Rising School and other future schools. At the same time, The Rising School team also established a Facebook page, and Dr. Rising started a blog focusing on educational issues. The Risings and others also worked for a year on writing the charter application for The Rising School. To help with this effort, the Risings in early 2012 attended the Arizona Charter School Association’s Charter Starter Program, an intensive training program for aspiring charter-school teams. In June 2012, the school submitted a 300-page application to the Arizona State Board of Charter Schools (ASBCS). Seven months later, on January 14, 2013, the ASBCS granted a charter to The Rising School, one of only seven new schools in Arizona to earn a charter that year! In September 2013, the school was one of only six schools in the state to receive the prestigious and highly coveted Arizona Charter School Program (AZ CSP) start-up grant, a federal grant worth up to $690,000. In March 2014, TRS secured a terrific school facility located at 7444 E. Broadway Blvd. In August 2014, TRS opened with 71 students in grades 6-9.
